Blog: Artist Focus | Studio Interview | Sam Toft
Artist & Sculptor
"My daily dog walks give me a relaxing space to daydream. I work from dreams not life. I trace shapes from my imagination."
Sam Toft's art which depicts her wonderful world of 'The Mustards' always brings plenty of smiles from people at the gallery. This week we have an interview with Sam which includes clips of her in her studio working on those fabulous creations!
How did you come to be an artist?
I didn’t realise you could make a living being an artist. Otherwise I would have started sooner. But I guess the negative experiences of working in offices, catering and bar work gave me a real reason to strive hard for success.
Describe your work in 3 words
Lovely to make.
What draws you to creating mixed-media based work?
My drawings are simple and the way I work adds texture without losing the liveliness of the original lines. I want to be very hands on and direct, rather than using a brush. I prefer fingers and thumbs and cloths and cutlery. I love the way accidents happen using different media so that each piece is a unique adventure.
Does the area in which you live or other areas influence your work?
Quite often I will notice something while walking the dogs. Maybe today’s brand new colour combinations in the sea and sky, or interesting compositions, snatches of music or even conversations overheard on the bus. Something always sparks an idea and inspires a picture to paint that day.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
My daily dog walks give me a relaxing space to daydream. I work from dreams not life. I trace shapes from my imagination.
Do you listen to any favourite music, radio or podcasts while working in the studio?
The Felice Brothers
Cheesy murder mystery audio books
Quite often just silence and a scented candle.
If you could invite three artists or art influencers (living or deceased) to dinner who would they be?
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Norman Rockwell, Ernest Shepherd.
What drew you to exhibit at the Watergate Street Gallery – do you have a criteria for choosing the galleries where you would like to show your work?
I am lucky to be able to only work with good, kind, supportive people.
What are you most excited about artistically in 2020?
Learning to throw a pot.
