The Watergate Street Gallery is excited to announce a two week exhibition dedicated to one of the most increasingly recognisable cityscape artists in the UK, Edward Waite. With an extensive exhibition portfolio established over the past four years, Ed’s recent ‘W1..Lines Of A City’ exhibition in London is testament to his continued success and the ever-widening demand for his energetic interpretations of the subject that fascinates him the most, the city.
After growing up in a seaside town on the east coast, it was Edward Waite’s move to Lincoln to study Fine Art in 2007 that captured his imagination and was the catalyst in his creative journey. Ed describes this experience, “I was constantly in awe of this new place, walking up and down the cobbled streets, this gothic city, the architecture, the lights, the buzz, the traffic..” Ed’s style has evolved from his desire to translate his experiences to the canvas in a way that truly captures the physical energy of each city in which he finds himself immersed. This is achieved through the initial elemental process of walking around with a sketchbook continually sketching what he sees; an immediate and active response to his surroundings. After graduating with a Fine Art degree, Ed travelled around the world for two years and as a consequence he accumulated not only a wealth of experiences, but also an array of visual stimuli through his sketchbook work.
The vibrancy of the city is Ed’s motivation and whether it is the palaces of Jaipur in India or the most familiar iconic skylines of New York, his large-scale paintings capture the unique and animated qualities of each city. Painting techniques such as blended brushwork are combined with drizzle techniques executed with the opposite end of the paintbrush and directly from the nozzle of the paint bottle (inspired by ketchup bottles in a New York diner!). The end result is without doubt an expressive work of art that brings the scene to life and shows that intrinsic relationship between drawing and painting.
"Every city has something new to offer and I cannot wait to be showcasing my latest collection of originals here in Chester. Before I exhibit in a city I spend time documenting it through my sketches ready to let my imagination shine through in my paintings. Chester’s history and architecture is every cityscape artists dream from the Roman Fortress to its Tudor-style buildings, it’s a city I have always loved to capture in my style and to collaborate with the Watergate Street Gallery is very exciting."
After introducing Edward Waite’s artwork to the Watergate Street Gallery only recently, it is not surprising that it has been received with significant interest and enthusiasm. We are eager to share this with you and also the added opportunity to meet the artist at our two launch events. With both a private view and live painting demonstration, learn more from the artist himself about exactly how his creative processes have culminated in the distinct Edward Waite trademark style!
